We are surrounded by negativity, bad news and malicious people. But we are also surrounded by beauty, love and awesome people. With hard work and integrity, we can “be the change we want to see in the world” – this song is about choosing the long road over the shortcut, the kind words over the vengeful ones, and forever striving to be a good soul. Tomorrow night in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario, George and Betty Ann will gather with friends and family to celebrate 50 years of marriage. Their son Jason asked if we’d write them a song for the occasion, and provided both biographical detail and music style preference. This recording is the result, and we’re told the plan is that they’ll be surprised with and dance to this song tomorrow evening. For once, we don’t care what you, random listener, think. We just really really really hope George and Betty Ann like it. Click to continue reading, comment and share »

For two white, middle-class (middle-aged? No… not yet, right?) men, we are hoping this offering strikes somewhere on the reggae pendulum around 311 but well below Bob Marley. A gender-specific (but not exclusive) song about strength, confidence, adversity and rain storms, we hope to convey a message of strength: don’t give up. Since the 52 song project was launched on December 17, 2010, we’ve had thousands of site visits from 38 countries. Because Chris and I both like to travel but have both been busy in Canada for awhile (and because I’m a big travel nerd), I want to see just how many countries we can get website hits from!

If you know someone in a different country, send them the link to this 52 song project post: http://52songproject.com/blog/were-collecting-countries/ .

So far, most of Africa is unspoken for, a lot of Asia is up for grabs, and we think Greenland and Antarctica will be particularly unattainable.

Spread the word and stake your claim! And if you are visiting our site from a distant land, leave your mark in our comment section of this post!

This is our most ambitious recording to date. Song 12 includes, in no particular order, 22 different layered audio tracks, over 70 audio plugins, lyrics and melodies lifted from Eddie Murphy, made up words, wind chimes, distorted Danko Jones-style bass, a fake party at Steve’s place and a breakdown with autotuned vocals recorded using an iPhone and the I Am T-Pain app. This week’s illustration also has more detail than any that precede it, so we recommend you click on it to see the larger version.

Now, all of this effort and work doesn’t necessarily a great song make. Just look at Avatar. And yet! We’re happy with it, and we hope you are too. Specifically, we hope you like to gambo. Click to continue reading, comment and share »

This one is a reverse chronological song about being tempted by the devil. Wait, is devil spelled with a capital “D?” I guess we’ll find out soon enough. Speaking of which, has anyone else noticed that the world has been getting a little wild? Though this song leans on poor decisions, today we encourage you to go out and make someone’s day. Please. And thank you. Click to continue reading, comment and share »

So, Chris is in Austin and Claire’s internet is down – so you’ll notice a couple of things this week. Most visually, there is not yet a graphic, so that will just be a little nugget you can look forward to in a couple of days… I was going to try to do one myself, but there is no way I could do it justice. Secondly, in Chris’ absence, to introduce this week’s song which is inspired by the rain slowly washing our snow away, I will be talking to myself. Click to continue reading, comment and share »

Ok, this was rushed and is sloppy. The song was written Wednesday and recorded Thursday night. At 1 a.m. Thursday night/Friday morning, we were too lazy to write a blog post, so we shot a video blog instead. Then we didn’t sleep, because we needed to upload the video and post it this morning. And now it’s morning and the words and the brain aren’t working so um, here. Click to continue reading, comment and share »

Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, Libya, and on, and on, and on. Friends, the world is changing before our eyes, before our tweets, before our Facebook statuses! This week’s song is a humble dedication. A minuscule, detached and nearly insignificant voice in the real movement that is going on all around us: people are dying, and people are truly living. Our hats are tipped through song. Ok you monsters. You think our last two songs have been too sad? Too slow? You say you want a “happy song?” You want us to pick up the tempo a little bit? Are you sure that’s what you want? I mean are you really sure? Because you know what they say about being careful what you wish for, and, well, we sure went for it this week. Just like that.
