The last two 52sp songs have been sappy, so after being energized by the absolutely spectacular electric storm that swept through as I was in Toronto yesterday, here is a more upbeat tune. If you have ever experienced within days of each other both a severe lack of sleep as well as the ability to relentlessly sleep all of the time, you may be able to relate to the lyrics. If not, you may find your head bobbing in time to the quick offbeats or the power guitar chorus. And if all that fails, set this tune as your morning alarm. It won’t let you down.

Discussion

STEVE: If you know me personally, you may notice that I seem to have the awkward problem where I am able to fall asleep in any place at any time and have an awful hard time waking up in the mornings. Often times (and to frame this positively) I have the ability to sleep through upwards of 5 alarms without recalling any one of them. Many of my friends align this with the concept of hibernation. I seem to have had this problem since, err, high school; I am sure many of my high school students can relate. To me, it is downright annoying, even though I do love my sleep.

This week’s song laments the hours and days and weeks that one loses if one sleeps too long. I often think about what I may have accomplished by now if I hadn’t have slept as much as I have in my life. I am proud of where I am, but maybe I could’ve written a book? Crafted a canoe? Learned Swahili?

Also, somewhere subconsciously, this song reminds me of waking people up when I worked at camp.

Song 28, yes I am still on it. I hope to have that lullaby out for you fine folks in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, it is back to school time!

Also, I am really looking forward to the next few weeks when both Chris and I will be (virtually, musically) available to each other – I much prefer bouncing our songs of each other over writing and recording on my own.

Ah-hem: WAKE UP!

Lyrics

I’m dreaming that I’m dreaming of
Open eyes and twisted love
Nightless sleeps and sleepless days

On the inside looking out
My sight fades as dark rains down
Nightless sleeps and sleepless days

Wake up

I’m dreaming that I’m dreaming of
A dream that I can’t get enough
Nightless sleeps and sleepless days

On the outside looking in
Now I see all of my sins
Nightless sleeps and sleepless days

Wake up

I fly around the clouds
I fall, come crashing down
And when I hit the earth
I realise what I’m worth

I’m dreaming that I’m dreaming of
Open eyes and twisted love
Nightless sleeps and sleepless days

Wake up
