Jetlag + missing friends overseas + Bulgaria + experiential education + true love + dancing at weddings + thinking about how we treat our health + pizza + memories that are so good they hurt + the ability to travel long distances in short periods of time + people that, even though you might see them once every few years, fit right back into your life + memories that are so bad they hurt + staying up too late when you should be keeping someone warm + lack of oxygen but abundance of radiation on airplanes + songwriting + 2 hours = Twist.

STEVE: I’m back (guess who’s back?). I’m back (guess who’s back?). It’s me! Steve! Chris has been shouldering a heck of a lot of the 52sp creativity for the past couple of weeks so I have been long overdue to take on a song. While I am a little overtired from traveling (I’ve been in Bulgaria this past week, you see), my head has been swimming in song (and general life) ideas, so I decided to take on song 27 as soon as I got to my summer residence in London, Ontario after my flight in from Sofia via Munich and Frankfurt.

One of the main themes that I started with was Chris’ idea a couple of weeks ago to explore simple song roots. A lot of the songs I have been putting together have been relying perhaps too heavily on other instruments, and particularly in the case where I have automated instruments, some sincerity is lost. Hence, I have accepted Chris’ encouragement to write honestly. This is a song I would play around a campfire, and while there are still programmed instruments in it, I can almost hear friends standing up in the gloaming to add their talents to this one.

The reason I was in Bulgaria was to attend a good friend’s wedding. Plenty of my high school friends were present, and since I went to high school in Abu Dhabi, a reunion of such a multitude of people is incredibly infrequent.

This song can be interpreted in many ways, but the main ideas that were floating around my head while penning this are how much I miss said friends, how far away in time and space my experiences with them are, and bringing things around to the current, how wonderful my partner is in her positive and down to earth influences on me. Speaking of which, it is late, I must sign off.

наздраве!

Lyrics

Somewhere lost in time
Stuck in the midst of a rhyme
And I see the side of you
Glowing like the moon, like the moon
And my heart wants to stay
But my legs want to leave this room

Rise up! Let the earth twist
Under your toes
Chase the sun and
We’ll see where it goes

Where is the line to be drawn?
And what if it’s our side that’s wrong?
When night blurs into day
Will the light shine on good things to say?
And my heart wants to stay
But my legs want to leave this place

Rise up! Let the earth twist
Under your toes
Chase the sun and
We’ll see where it goes

And if I’ve found my way
And yes, I’ve found my way
True north is infinitely clear
With you as my compass, dear: I am your wheel to steer
And my heart wants to stay
And my arms want to draw you near

Rise up! Let the earth twist
Under your toes
Chase the sun and
We’ll see where it goes
And I know that
You’ll show me where it goes
